When completed, the Independence Class carriers' final design violated nearly every rule about carrier design the Navy had so far learned. They were too small for effective operations in some weather conditions; the flight deck, hangar deck, and workshops too small; aircraft storage inadequate, protection insufficient. In the one way that mattered, though, they were superb.
