| Get ready for an incredible journey up the former Western Pacific highline aboard a BNSF freight train. Traveling between Keddie and Klamath Falls, the ride is an exciting way to view the stunningly beautiful trackage of the Inside Getaway.
A few years ago, these tracks were nearly abandoned and saw no through trains. Now, as a result of railroad mergers, the line plays an important role in BNSF's overall strategy and traffic levels are at record highs.
The highline is known for its isolation, and the only way to get into the remote areas is a board a train. You'll see the Pit River canyon and other seldom-seen views as the long freight traverses miles of secluded countryside. Since this is dark territory, you'll see how crews run via Track Warrant Central and manually operate switches after meeting other trains.
The ride along former Great Northern track above Bieber is a fast-paced run through pine forests and across semi-arid lands to the north. Awe-inspiring vistas of Mt. Lassen and Mt. Shasta are seen from the train as it passes through scenic portions of the line. Scenes shot from the locomotive cab and from the ground show the variety of trains crossing high trestles, passing through tunnels, and crawling up steep grades and around sharp curves.
Railroaders work hard on the Gateway Sub: it's a place of awesome landscapes and exciting railroad operations.
