Used by virtually every American railroad, the 4-4-0 was tailor-made for rough track and equally at home in freight or passenger service. In later years, many were rebuilt for secondary assignments, especially on branchlines where the lightweight engines were often the only locos that track and bridges could support! As a result, some were in use until the end of steam.
