Kansas City Power & Light operates four coal-fired plants supplying electric power to the states of Kansas and Missouri around the greater Kansas City area.
Two of the plants are co-owned by other utilities in the area. The La Cygne Generating Station, located on the Kansas City Southern, is jointly owned with Kansas Gas & Electric.
The plant opened in it's first unit in 1973 with a second coming online in 1977 and together are rated at over 1,500 megawatts. 109 Thrall Gondolas, KCLX 7251-7359, were used to haul coal to the plant.
